FIVE SUCCULENT CARE TIPS
For those of you who planted a seed during 1000roots, your work is not over! Worry not; succulents are pretty low maintenance, but follow our five steps to keeping your plant happy, healthy and hydrated.
1. Choose a comfortable home
- Succulents can thrive inside or outside, however… in London, beware of frost!
- If you have a garden, we’d recommend keeping it outside during the summer but bring it inside over the winter
- Succulents have a chance of survival if they’re dry before a cold snap
2. Water more, less often
- Succulents like to have their soil soaked and dried out before watering again
- So, soak the soil then let it dry out completely
- Don’t use a spray bottle for watering! We suggest using a small watering can
- Water your succulent once a week in the summer, less frequently in the winter
3. Treat them to lots of sunlight – but not too much
- If your plant is inside, put it somewhere it can receive bright light during the day
- About six hours of sunlight a day is ideal
- Your succulent can get sunburnt (brown/black spots on the leaves) so move them if the sunlight is too direct
- Your succulent may start ‘stretching’ if they do not receive enough sunlight (gets really tall with lots of space between leaves) – if this happens, find a sunnier spot!
4. Replant every year… if you can
- This will help your plant to keep as healthy as possible
- When you remove the succulent from the pot, carefully clear away the old soil from the roots
- Replant in larger pot and place the pot in fresh succulent soil
- Allow the plant to rest out of direct sunlight for a week or two before watering it
5. Grow more succulents!
- Pluck a stem from your succulent, let it dry out in the shade for at least three days
- Place the new stem on top of succulent soil
- After a few weeks you will see little pink roots sprouting from the end of the leaves!
Good luck!
